BE SAFE ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

We all now a days like to make new friends and catch up with old ones with Social networking sites such as Orkut, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, etc. I must admit its a fun how we 'meet' our long forgotten friends through these sites and re-live good old days. We share our life experiences, jokes, laughs without actually meeting them in person. Isn't it cool but these are modern days who knows what future holds for us may be Second Life will become common phenomenon.

These sites have given us a space which we always longed to have. To day we can share our ideas with the world like never before now we have the freedom to say what we want without any fear.

But as they say "Everything in this world has a positive side and a negative side".

So here I would like to discuss few tips to make your online space as secure as your home.

# Don't divulge too much information about your self in your Profile page.

#Never give your true address or telephone number on these sites as u can become a victim of harassment from marketing people or other exploiters .

#Try using your nickname instead of actual name.

#Don't post your personal photographs. Remember you can always use a more secure option- email to share your kodak moments.

# Don't share your day to day plans online if you want to keep stalkers at bay.

#Report abuse abuse in case of suspicious behavior.

#Define access to your profile with care.

#Be wary of spywares, trojans, etc.

# Use spam filters , firewalls etc judiciously.

REMEMBER NO MATTER WHAT BUT VIRTUAL NETWORKING IS NO REPLACEMENT OF REAL SOCIAL NETWORKING.

SURF INTERNET SAFELY and BE SECURE ONLINE

TIPS TO SURF INTERNET SAFELY
  • Don't disclose confidential information about yourself online. limit the information you give about yourself online. Never use your real name and address when not sure of authenticity of site.
  • Never share your passwords with anyone.
  • Don't automatically assume something sent from a 'friend' is legimate. Spammers can easily spoof email addresses.
  • Be careful before adding strangers to your friends list . Take special care if you and your online friends get identical 'friend requests' from another user.
  • Don't use links in embedded emails to go to any unfamiliar site, even if it's from a friend, especially if it has any thing to do with your finances.
  • Set limits to what people can view in your profile. Eg orkut enable you to block strangers from viewing your profile depending on your settings.
  • Always keep an updated antivirus in your PC. You may download free antivirus.
  • Keep the firewall on.
  • I would recommend never to use "remember me" option while opening e-mail account or any other secure account.
